Summer Reading? Summer Reading!
What's that? You don't want to ready ANY books?
Well, actually there were some guys who felt the same way and who for some reason went on to become authors anyway. First, and perhaps the most surprising is James Patterson. Patterson became famous for writing adult novels in which characters were disposed of in a variety of interesting ways. He then went on to write Young Adult novels which were similar but which included mysterious powers and lots of anguish.
He then turned his attention to that most anguish producing experience that can befall most mortals...middle school. He has written several books about this but for starters I suggest Middle School, Get Me Out of Here! and I Funny, a Middle School Story. You can hear James Patterson talk about his middle school books below.
The Charlie Joe Jackson series
Another great series are those that follow the adventures of Charlie Joe Jackson. You might want to try Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Summer Vacation where our hero finds himself in Camp Ritubukkee (try sounding it out), a camp for nerds whose high points include study halls and writing sessions. Charlie decides to subvert this regime and with the unlikely help of Lech Walesa succeeds and finds himself strangely subverted in the process.
If You Like Star Wars...
Finally, you need to meet Obert Skye author of Potterwookie, the Creature from my Closet. You can meet him below.
In a sense, you can have the best of both worlds. You can amaze and delight your parents and friends by actually reading and along the way you can meet some pretty interesting guys.
